At least 113 different cannabinoids have been isolated from the Cannabis plant. The differences between these Cannabinoids can be determined by their chemical structure and prevalence within the plant. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a prevalent cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that has no psychoactive effect. Another prevalent cannabinoid is the psychoactive compound THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). The remaining cannabinoids are found at lower concentrations in the cannabis plant and are thought to act in concert with the main cannabinoids, to exert an ‘entourage’ effect.
THC is the compound in cannabis that causes the commonly known euphoric feeling. To put it more scientifically, it has a ‘psychoactive effect’. When ingested by humans, THC binds to the cannabinoid receptor called CB1 and interacts with the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
CBD, when ingested by humans, has no psychoactive effect. CBD does not bind to the cannabinoid receptors like THC, but it does indirectly activate the body’s Endocannabinoid system (ECS). Cannabidiol works by stimulating the regulatory Endocannabinoid System (ECS) via receptors throughout the human body and help the ECS maintain equilibrium.
Making All the Difference
The two cannabinoids are viewed very differently by the law. In the UK and Ireland, THC is not a legal substance, whereas CBD is completely legal as long as it has a THC content of under 0.2 per cent.
When looking for CBD products to buy, it is important to choose a reputable manufacturer with clinically proven results. Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) establishes stringent guidelines in order to manufacture products such as food, drink, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements and medical devices. GMP ensures consistency and quality, enabling consumers to buy products with confidence
