This week, 10th – 16th May, represents Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK and Mental Health Week in Europe. Lockdowns and restrictions over the past year have put a strain on many people’s mental health. This campaign provides a chance for people to talk about all aspects of mental health, share personal stories of how people cope with difficulties during the coronavirus crisis and highlight the need for action focusing on advice and support.
Mental health is about our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through to adulthood.
According to a recent report by the Office for National Statistics, over 19 million adults in Great Britain reported high levels of anxiety during lockdown. Furthermore, 1 in 5 (21%) adults experienced some form of depression in early 2021 (27 January to 7 March) - this is more than double that observed before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic¹.
In the UK, the Mental Health Foundation has chosen Nature as its theme. Getting outside, in the fresh air, smelling the flowers, listening to the birds and being present in that moment can have extraordinary effects on one’s mind.
The world has been developing and our lifestyles have been changing at a rapid pace. Inevitably, this can leave us feeling stressed and anxious, burnt out at work and uninspired and unmotivated in our private lives. Thankfully, it is never too late to reconnect with nature and reach a calmer, more balanced state. The Mental Health Foundation is asking that we all take time this week to reconnect to the natural world in a meaningful way and consciously think about how it makes us feel. So, lets get outside and enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer!
